Desk Report:
Bangladesh’s Globe Biotech’s coronavirus-resistant mRNA vaccine ‘Bangovax‘ has obtained a US patent (intellectual property). This is the first time a vaccine in Bangladesh’s pharmaceutical industry has received a patent in the US.
This information was given at a press conference at the head office of Globe Pharmaceuticals in Tejgaon Industrial Area on Sunday (September 14).
Globe Biotech said that during the coronavirus outbreak, their scientists Dr. Kakon Nag and Dr. Nazneen Sultana began research on the development of Covid-19 detection kits, vaccines and medicines. As a result, the invented mRNA vaccine received approval for clinical trials from the Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) and the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA).
In 2020, the genetic coding sequence of the vaccine was published in the US NCBI database. Later, the research paper was published in the US medical journal Elsevier’s Vaccines and the UK’s Nature journal. The World Health Organization included this vaccine in the list of Covid vaccines in 2020.
Globe Biotech said that Bangovax has been proven completely safe and effective in trials on monkeys. It is also effective against various corona variants in a single dose. Using the nanotechnology-based technology used in the vaccine, it is possible to produce vaccines of other technologies including mRNA and modern medicines for cancer, diabetes and complex diseases in the future.
Researchers said that the US patent indicates international recognition not only of the vaccine, but also of Bangladesh’s technological capabilities. After final testing, it will be available to the public.
By obtaining the patent, the domestic technology has been internationally recognized. This will ensure Bangladesh’s vaccine self-reliance, make it possible to produce vaccines at low cost, and earn foreign exchange by exporting abroad.
Experts believe that this innovation will play an important role in the transition to LDC status in 2026 and meet the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
